Value-Minded Millennials Impact Jewelry Styles

January 29, 2009

In the future, we will see new trends in jewelry styles as the millenials, those 20-somethings, that are now getting into their full purchasing power. In particular, trends in bridal jewelry are already seeing signs that the millennials know what they want and are willing to go after it. Diamond jewelry is still fashionable, but value is uppermost in this generation’s mind. Diamonds are a value product in that they maintain good demand over time, so they will never go out of style. However, the settings and fashions are now turning on the tastes of millennials in the market for value pieces.

One of the biggest changes is the preference for platinum for bridal jewelry. This metal is harder than gold and far more durable. It is more expensive than gold, but also holds its value very well. So, value-minded millennials prefer this precious metal for their settings as a way of owning a jewelry piece that won’t lose its value in the markets in the future.

Custom pieces also tend to hold value longer and so are favored by a generation that is putting its stamp on everything they see. This generation is very Internet savvy. And, with the advent of online diamond retailers they can often customize a ring from various settings and stones to virtually build a unique piece right before their eyes, even before the jewelry is delivered to their door. So, they can use both their Internet skills and the many different options in styles and stones to create pieces that might not be available in regular retail stores (since they’re created on the fly and by each individual customer).
